Moving to Fairhope, Alabama — What You Need to Know in 2026

by Michael Maxie

If there's one city on Alabama's Eastern Shore that people fall in love with before they ever buy a home here, it's Fairhope.

I've lived on the Eastern Shore my entire life and I've watched Fairhope develop a reputation that extends well beyond Alabama. People come down from Nashville, Atlanta, and Chicago to visit — and a surprising number of them end up calling me shortly after. There's something about this place that just gets people.

Here's my honest breakdown of what life in Fairhope actually looks like in 2026.

Where Is Fairhope, Alabama?

Fairhope sits on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Baldwin County, about 20-30 minutes south of Mobile and just south of Daphne. It's the southernmost of the three main Eastern Shore cities and in many ways the most distinct in character.

It doesn't feel like most Alabama towns. It has a walkable downtown, a thriving arts scene, bayfront parks, and a quality of life that draws people from across the country. The price point reflects that — but for a lot of buyers, it's worth every penny.

Downtown Fairhope — The Real Deal

If walkability matters to you, Fairhope is the only Eastern Shore city that genuinely delivers it.

Downtown Fairhope has boutique shops, locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, and art galleries all within walking distance of each other. It's the kind of downtown that actually has foot traffic on a Tuesday afternoon — not just on weekends. Residents walk to dinner, walk to the farmers market, walk to events. For buyers coming from larger cities who don't want to give up that lifestyle entirely, Fairhope is usually the answer.

The arts and culture scene here is legitimate too. Fairhope has a long history as an arts community — galleries, live music, local theater, and a creative energy that's woven into the fabric of the city. If that matters to your quality of life, you'll feel it here.

The Fairhope Pier and Bayfront — Worth the Drive Alone

Drive down Scenic Highway 98 into Fairhope and you'll understand why people fall for this place before they even get out of the car. The tree-lined drive down to the bay is genuinely one of the prettier stretches of road in the state.

The Fairhope pier and the sandy beaches along the bay are unlike anything else on the Eastern Shore. It's not the Gulf — the water is calmer, the vibe is quieter, and the sunsets over Mobile Bay from the pier are something people come back for over and over again. Bayfront Park gives residents direct access to the water, and the beachfront along the bay is one of Fairhope's most underrated assets.

If you're coming from a landlocked state and want water access without full Gulf Coast pricing, Fairhope delivers that in a way that's hard to put a value on.

The Schools — Consistently Strong

Fairhope schools are consistently among the top performers in Baldwin County, which is already one of the stronger school districts in Alabama. Fairhope Elementary, Fairhope Middle, and Fairhope High School all have strong academic reputations and active parent communities.

For families relocating with children, the school quality here combined with the overall quality of life makes Fairhope a compelling choice — even at a higher price point than Spanish Fort or Daphne.

New Construction in Fairhope — More Options Than People Realize

Fairhope has a reputation as an established, older community — and while that's partly true, there's more active new construction here than most people realize.

DR Horton currently builds in three Fairhope communities. Harvest Green East and West offer some of the best lot sizes in DR Horton's local portfolio, with pricing that represents strong value for the Fairhope market. Cottonwood Estates is a growing DR Horton community with a more accessible entry price point for buyers who want Fairhope's lifestyle without the luxury price tag. And Old Battles Village rounds out DR Horton's Fairhope presence as another active community worth putting on your tour list.

New construction in Fairhope does come in at a higher price point than Spanish Fort — but you're buying into a market with strong appreciation history and long-term demand that isn't going anywhere.

The Price Point — Let's Be Honest About It

Fairhope is the most expensive of the three Eastern Shore cities. That's just the truth.

Resale homes in desirable Fairhope neighborhoods regularly push into the $400K-$600K range and beyond. Luxury bayfront and downtown-adjacent properties can go significantly higher. Even new construction here typically comes in above comparable DR Horton product in Spanish Fort.

What you're paying for is real — the downtown, the schools, the bayfront access, the lifestyle, the long-term appreciation. For buyers where budget has some flexibility and quality of life is the top priority, Fairhope consistently delivers. For buyers who are more budget-conscious, Spanish Fort gives you a lot of the same Eastern Shore lifestyle at a lower price point.

Is Fairhope the Right Fit for You?

Fairhope is the right call if walkability, arts and culture, bayfront lifestyle, and top-tier schools are your priorities — and your budget can support it. It's the most distinctive city on the Eastern Shore and the one people tend to feel most strongly about once they've spent time here.

If budget is tighter, Spanish Fort gives you great schools and new construction value. If you want the most options at the widest range of price points, Daphne is worth a look. But if Fairhope is calling you, there's usually a reason — and it's usually right.
