Is Spanish Fort, Alabama a Good Place to Live? 2026 Local Guide

by Michael Maxie

If you're Googling "is Spanish Fort, Alabama a good place to live," you're probably already pretty serious about a move to the Eastern Shore — and you want someone to just give you a straight answer.

I'm Michael Maxie. I was born and raised on Alabama's Eastern Shore. I graduated from Daphne High School, I coach youth sports here, and I've spent my entire career selling homes in Spanish Fort, Daphne, and Fairhope. My son grew up in this community.

So here's my straight answer: Yes. Spanish Fort is a genuinely great place to live. But it's not for everyone — and I'd rather tell you that upfront than let you figure it out after you've moved.

Here's what you actually need to know.

What Is Spanish Fort, Alabama?

Spanish Fort is a small city in Baldwin County, sitting on the northeastern edge of Mobile Bay. It's directly connected to Mobile via the I-10 causeway, which makes it one of the most commuter-friendly spots on the Eastern Shore.

Baldwin County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the entire country right now. Spanish Fort sits right in the middle of that growth — and it's one of the main reasons home values here have held strong even as the broader market has shifted.

It doesn't have the waterfront restaurants of Daphne or the boutique downtown of Fairhope. What it has is convenience, great schools, newer homes, and a tight-knit community feel that's genuinely hard to find at this price point.

The Schools — The #1 Reason Families Move Here

If you have kids, this is probably why Spanish Fort is on your list.

Spanish Fort Elementary, Spanish Fort Middle, and Spanish Fort High School are consistently among the top-performing schools in Baldwin County — which itself is one of the top-rated school districts in Alabama. The high school has strong academics, competitive athletics, and the kind of parent involvement that actually moves the needle.

I coach youth sports here. I see firsthand how much this community invests in kids. It's not just on paper — it's real.

If schools are your top priority in a move, Spanish Fort is hard to beat anywhere on the Eastern Shore.

The Commute

Spanish Fort's location on I-10 is a legit advantage.

  • Mobile: 20-25 minutes on a normal day
  • Pensacola: About an hour east on I-10
  • Gulf Shores / Orange Beach: 45-60 minutes south
  • Daphne and Fairhope: 10-15 minutes down the road

If your job is in Mobile or you travel through Mobile, Spanish Fort is the most practical place to live on the Eastern Shore. You get the community feel without sacrificing access.

Cost of Living

Compared to most metros people relocate from — Atlanta, Nashville, Houston, Tampa — Spanish Fort is affordable. Genuinely affordable.

New construction homes start in the low $300s. You can get a well-built 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom home in an established community for what would buy you a 2-bedroom condo in most major cities.

Property taxes in Baldwin County are among the lowest in the Southeast. No state income tax in Alabama. The day-to-day cost of groceries, gas, and dining out is lower than most places people are coming from.

I've had buyers move here from South Florida who felt like they were getting away with something. That's not an exaggeration.

New Construction — Spanish Fort Is Growing Fast

Spanish Fort has become one of the most active new construction markets in the region. DR Horton has multiple communities here. You'll find move-in ready homes, builder incentives, and modern floor plans that are hard to get in resale inventory.

The growth here is real and it's not slowing down. More retail, more restaurants, better infrastructure — it's coming. If you're buying now, you're getting in ahead of the next wave of development that will only make this area more valuable.

What Spanish Fort Is NOT

I'd be doing you a disservice if I didn't say this.

Spanish Fort doesn't have a walkable downtown. If you're looking for a Main Street with coffee shops, boutiques, and a weekend farmer's market — that's Fairhope. Spanish Fort is more suburban in feel. It's spread out. You're going to drive to most things.

It's also not a waterfront community in the way Daphne is. You're close to the bay, but you're not on it.

If lifestyle and walkability are your top priorities, Spanish Fort might not win over Fairhope. If schools, newer homes, affordability, and commute access matter more — Spanish Fort is probably your answer.

Bottom Line

Spanish Fort is one of the best-value places to live on Alabama's Eastern Shore right now. Great schools, growing community, newer housing stock, and easy access to Mobile and the Gulf Coast.

It's not flashy. It's solid. And for the families I work with — especially those relocating from higher cost-of-living markets — it consistently exceeds expectations.

If you're thinking about making a move to Spanish Fort and want to talk through neighborhoods, builder options, or what your budget actually gets you here, I'd love to connect.
